Under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester presents a programme rich in musical evocation and spiritual poetry. In 1983, the Romanian composer Marius Constant wrote a symphonic suite of interludes and overtures from Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande. Maeterlinck’s symbolist poetry – here evoked by purely instrumental music – is answered by Rimbaud’s verses set to music by Britten in his song cycle Les illuminations. With her crystalline soprano voice and clear enunciation, Sabine Devieilhe will carry both text and music with refined perfection. Another musical evocation of a spiritual text, Sinfonia da Requiem, was composed on the eve of the Second World War, while Ravel’s Valse takes us, in a whirlwind of human grace and madness, to the days after the Great War.
