I Did It My Way - Beethoven & Shostakovich Whether it's a unique concert or a special presentation, this programme has plenty of room for individuality. Few composers were as young as Shostakovich when he presented his first symphony at the age of nineteen. And the premiere of Symphony No. 1 by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1926 was something of a revelation. With a nod to vaudeville and a wink at the cheeky waltz, Shostakovich captured the zeitgeist of the roaring twenties in this masterpiece. His student days as a pianist accompanying silent films led to unexpected plot twists in Symphony No. 1.A rarity among Beethoven concertos, his unruly Triple Concerto (1803) is performed by pianist Martin Helmchen, accompanied by cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker (winner of the Rostropovich Cello Competition) and Stephen Waarts, who you may remember as a finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition for violin (2015). The Greek conductor Constantinos Carydis breathes new life into the idiosyncratic masters. You will get a full sense of what man can achieve when he walks his own path and ignores convention.Listen to the playlist "Piano Lovers" on Spotify
