Powerful texts are relevant throughout the times. More than a century ago Maurice Maeterlinck wrote Les Aveugles, which can still be read, spoken, sung, listened to today ... and is still fully comprehensible in our own time.

A group of blind people on an island, in a forest, in autumn ... they can hear the sea, the falling leaves. They wait for their guide, their leader, their priest ... he who can see. Where is he? Did he leave? For a moment or forever? Will he come back? Is he dead? They don’t know, they can’t see, they wait.

The blind, the washed-up, the refugees, the left-behind ... they that cannot see. And the priest, the leader, the guide ... can he see, or is he seeing blind? And the audience, they who come to watch ... can they see?

De Blinden is the third part of Josse De Pauw’s trilogy/trifony, after De Helden and De Mensheid. The composition this time is by Jan Kuijken, sung by Collegium Vocale Gent. On the scene: Josse De Pauw, Gorges Ocloo and Taka Shamoto.
