The talk will first take a general look at how Egmont has been received, his fights and his fortune down the centuries, from the committed drama of Goethe to the famous painting by Gallait. The speaker will then focus on the history of the monumental statue of Egmont and Hornes in Petit Sablon square. Recalling the debates around this statue will allow her to demonstrate that the place of these “illustrious Belgians” in the memory of Belgium and Brussels has experienced changes and instability. A third theme will focus on the performances of Egmont by Goethe that took place in 1958 in the Grand-Place in Brussels as part of the festivities for the World Fair. She will then tackle the question of the near future of the figure of Egmont, by asking what this could be in the 21st century.
