Born in Timi?oara, Romania, Cristian Macelaru studied in the United States where, aged just 19, he distinguished himself as the youngest concertmaster in the history of the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Winner of the Solti Conducting Award in 2014, the Romanian musician later became music director of the WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne. In September 2020, Macelaru succeeded Emmanuel Krivine as Music Director of the Orchestre National de France. It is in this capacity that he performs at Bozar with the prestigious French orchestra, in a repertoire featuring the rhythmic, orchestral and melodic creativity of Rachmaninov, the expressive harmonies of Janácek, and the technical mastery of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, tamed for the occasion by the excellent Boris Giltburg.
