The municipality of Molenbeek experienced significant population growth in the 19th century as a result of the industrial activities along the Canal. A new Maison Communale or municipal hall, designed by the architect Jean-Baptiste Janssens, was opened in 1889. It is designed in an eclectic version of the colossal or giant architectural order, and faced with white Gobertange stone. A corner tower where the building’s two façades meet is topped by a grey-green oxidised copper dome. Inside, an imposing marble staircase leads to the upper floor. The Place Communale, the square adjoining the building, was renovated in 2014 to make it more pedestrian-friendly, and hosts a very cosmopolitan market every Thursday morning.
