In 1958, antique dealer Georges Van de Weghe, settled near Sablon Square, asked the priest of the Notre-Dame church permission to display his engravings after mass on Sunday mornings. The priest proposed to unite several antique dealers to create a market.
After several months of administrative procedures in the City, permission was finally granted on 9th of October 1959. The market is allowed on a trial basis on Sunday mornings.
On 3rd April 1960, seventeen courageous pioneers inaugurated the very first Sablon Antique Market.
Organised by the non-profit organization “Marché des Antiquités” (Antique Market), it was successful from the very beginning.
A European première, the Sablon Antique Market combines fascinating time-travel with a typical Brussels way of living. Her international reputation has not marred its charm.
The unavoidable rendezvous location for amateurs of items that are at least 30 years old!
