• Difference Day

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of the freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Charlie Hebdo events in Paris, where eight journalists were killed, were the manifestation of a sad and horrible trend. On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the VUB, ULB, the Erasmushogeschool Brussel, Bozar and other partners nominated May 3rd Difference Day. Celebrating the freedom of the press and freedom of expression means honouring people and organizations that make a difference by protecting and promoting these values. During Difference Day, the rich and varied programme is filled with speakers, meetings, films, debates and exhibitions that challenge the freedom of expression and the press.

  • Zinneke Trophy 2016

On 10 September 2016 no less than seven Bantry skiffs (that is, 10% of all seagoing skiffs in the world) were assembled in Brussels for the second edition of the Zinneke Trophy. In the presence of crews from Dunkerque, Rennes, Troyes, Gand, Rouen, an Irish crew, and the lifeblood of "Zinneke," Mayor Yvan Mayeur christened the new skiff the Uilenspiegel. Aside from the International Atlantic Challenge which is held every two years, there are several gatherings of this kind of boat, such as the Semaine du Golf in Morbihan, Brest, or Douarnenez. Despite the logistical challenges, the Zinneke Trophy provides Brussels with such a regular gathering by linking the nautical event with the city's cultural offerings.

A few facts and figures: alignment of seven unique boats in Brussels, 110 participants, investment of €14,000 with the support of the City and Region of Brussels.
