Unique training program for associations in Europe

visit.brussels supports the creation of a training programme for association managers, that’s unique in Europe, and organised in Brussels by the famous Solvay Business School of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

We spoke to professor Philippe Biltiau, the programme’s academic director.

How would you define this training programme?

I would first like to bring your attention to the fact that this training programme is unique in Europe and represents a genuine opportunity in Brussels.

The programme trains association mangers to be able to deal with the different aspects of their job: leadership, marketing, strategy, finances, accounting…

To do so we call upon Solvay university professors, with every presentation illustrated by one or more experts of the sector, to make sure that what’s being said corresponds to the specificities of the sector.

The programme comes from a genuine need expressed by associations: due to the increasing complexity of the economy and businesses, the ability to take a step back and reassess the best way to work has become indispensable.

This is the opinion of Susanne Zänker, Director General A.I.S.E., the International Association of Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products, for example when she tells us:

An outstanding mixture of teachers, their professional and didactic skills to explain the content illustrated through very practical and relevant examples, and of an extreme richness of real life experience shared by the participants during the courses.

Has the programme evolved since its creation 4 years ago?

Every year, the 25 to 30 participants give us a debriefing of the training they have received. We are, therefore, able to adapt the course each time, to deal with the comments and requests. It was thanks to this feedback that we introduced new lessons and sessions on how businesses change, the specifics of VAT for associations, on legal considerations etc. We pay special attention to the satisfaction of our participants.

Gabriela Diezhandino, Director of Public Policy EFAMA - European Fund and Asset Management Association tells us:

The programme touches upon the different elements that, together, form the life of an association. This could not fit better with my everyday working life, as Director of Public Policy in a European Association. It also puts you outside your working routines and methods, and provides you with new lenses, perspectives and visions.

Lastly? What would you say to someone who is hesitating to sign up?

I would say that, first of all, they should thoroughly research the programme by visiting our website, downloading the brochure or contacting our Programme Manager.

Then, they should ask us to get in contact with programme alumni who could answer more specific or personal questions they may have.

Finally, the fact that, from the very beginning, we have been encouraged and supported by 4 major industry sponsors - visit.brussels, the European Society of Association Executives (ESAE), the Union of International Associations (UIA) and the Federation of European and International Associations (FAIB) – shows just how much this programme meets the needs of association managers.
