    À l’Ombre de la Ville

In the heart of the capital, between the Royal Palace and the Egmont Gardens, À l’Ombre de la Ville is hidden down a cobbled side street ‘in the shadow of the city’. Low lighting and timeless decor make it ideal for a romantic evening. You are welcomed into this charming atmosphere by Maria, who will lead you to a table covered with a floral tablecloth and adorned with wine glasses and candleholders. Don’t miss the room that doubles up as a pantry, where the vegetables used to make your meal are displayed in baskets and on shelves. You can also see the chef, Sami, at work in his open kitchen.

The exposed brick walls give the place a warm feel. As you enter through the velvet curtains, Lorah welcomes you while chefs, Alexandru and Jean-Jacques prepare your meal and Jérémie offers some excellent wine suggestions. Jérémie and Alexandru started out working together at the Wine Bar and then met their two other team members at Odette en Ville. With its focus on seasonal produce and good food - or bonne chère - the menu does not disappoint. Osteria Romana

Also not far from the Jardin de l'Abbaye de la Cambre is Osteria Romana, an upmarket Italian restaurant. With its impressive pillars, high ceilings and original floor tiles, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in an antique shop especially given some of the quirky decor choices, including an old bookcase, a bar full of crystal glasses and an old sewing machine. This style extends to the food which is presented in surprising and unexpected ways, to say the least: a wooden mouse trap for the cheese, ceramic sea urchin bowl for the small soup or a vine branch adorned with Jewish style fried artichokes. The brain behind this Japanese-inspired menu is chef Filippo La Vecchia, who trained in Osaka.
