Abd Al Malik - Le jeune noir à l'épée

22/10/2019 - 22/10/2019

With his new show, ‘Le Jeune Noir à l’épée’, Abd Al Malik combines contemporary art, dance, theatre, and music. His starting point is in a painting by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and continues with philosophical writings of Édouard Glissant on creolisation and colonisation, and draws inspiration from Baudelaire's poetic language. Abd Al Malik propels the story of this young black boy into our era in order to come up with a long poem on identity in the age of globalisation. The story of this young black boy is broken up and interspersed throughout the performance in rhythmic, shouted, rapped, slammed, and sung rebellion over black, white, mixed-race, old and modern music made from melodic fragments and contrasting music samples whose accidental and unexpected combination will emerge, against all odds, as something new and harmonious.
