‘L’alba separa dalla luce l’ombra...’ ‘The dawn divides the darkness from the light / And my sensual pleasure from my desire... Envelop me, O Night in your maternal breast... / But let the dawn rise from my blood / And from my brief dream the eternal sun!’ These verses by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, set to music by Paolo Tosti in his Quattro canzoni d’Amaranta, superbly capture the atmosphere of Anna Caterina Antonacci’s recital. The Italian soprano invites her audience to musical wanderings that, from sunrise to sunset, evoke every possible shade of light. Antonacci, our guest in each of the last two seasons, in Fauré’s Pénélope and Poulenc’s La Voix humaine, returns to La Monnaie with her regular pianist, Donald Sulzen, and a string quartet. In this programme, she continues to explore her love of French and Italian music of the 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a fine counterpoint to Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Ponchielli’s La Gioconda.
