Want to get a different perspective on Art Nouveau? Around twenty Art Nouveau books and bindings from the Bibliotheca Wittockiana’s collection will be put on public display; some of these will be exhibited at the Maison Autrique town house, the others being dispersed throughout the exhibition currently underway at the Wittockiana. The exhibition by the APPAR group (the Association for the Promotion of the Arts and Bookbinding), will present contemporary works and books from independent publishers. The contrast between these contemporary books, the product of modern bookbinding, and the books presenting wallpaper conceived by Henry van de Velde, among others, will captivate and surprise you, showing you a little-known aspect of the decorative arts and the Art Nouveau style. On Saturday 15 September at 14h00, Noémie Goldman (PhD in Art History), will host a conference on illustrated books, Les XX (a group of Belgian artists and designers formed in 1883) and its successor, La Libre Esthétique. The conference will explore the illustrations made by vingtistes (as they called themselves) such as Fernand Khnopff, Félicien Rops, Théo Van Rysselberghe and Georges Lemmen. At the same time, children will get to enjoy a creative workshop, where they will learn a simple bookbinding technique. They will then be able to decorate their creations using stencils inspired by Art Nouveau motifs.
