Tuareg guitarist and singer Omara “Bombino” Moctar began playing the guitar as a child refugee in Algeria, and mastered his skills as a refugee yet again as a young man in Burkina Faso after members of his band in Niger were executed by the government for being suspected rebels.
Bombino famously chose the guitar instead of the gun as his means of empowering himself and the Tuareg people of Niger. Now is the most celebrated Tuareg musician in the world spreading his message of peace, Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.
