Bruegel

Mad Meg takes you on a journey through time. A kaleidoscopic portrait of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and the era in which he created her. After the daring 1095 (2017) and the controversial Hamlet (2018), Lisaboa Houbrechts and Kuiperskaai delve into history once again with their new creation Bruegel. 1095 took us to the dark universe of the crusades. The raw adaptation of Hamlet resulted in a surprising family portrait, ranging from intimate to insane. Lisaboa constantly challenges her actors to multifaceted playing styles, which are allowed to clash and cause friction.

Bruegel is Lisaboa Houbrechts’ kaleidoscopic portrait of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and the times in which he created the figure of Mad Meg. She takes the viewer on a journey through time. She is derided as a butch hag because she steals objects for hell. But what if, rather than stealing those objects, she is trying to rescue them? Lisaboa Houbrechts creates a tale with those lost objects as the common thread.
