John Adams, one of America’s greatest contemporary composers, described his Short Ride in a Fast Machine as a ‘fanfare for orchestra. It gets off to a flying start with a hypnotic percussion part that gets the orchestra swinging along. Piazzolla grew up in New York but later returned to his native Argentina, where he and his beloved bandoneon were immersed in the tango. The result is a unique, alternatively rousing and sensual music such as in his Concierto para Bandonéon or Oblivion.

Dvořák wrote his 9th Symphony 400 years after the discovery of the new world. And though the work was written in New York, it evokes principally the idyllic landscapes of Dvořák’s beloved Bohemia.
