Brussels is the largest European city occupied by the Germans during the First World War. Its inhabitants were very creative and showed strong solidarity. The resistance was organized quite quickly : resourceful at first, impressively adequate in the later years. Survival is a daily battle : parks are transformed into vegetable gardens and the Jubilee park housed a large dovecote. People line up for scarce food rations and the black market flourished . The injured are being treated in the Royal Palace and the motorized ambulance is introduced. Many women play a vital role not only in the organization of care, but also in the 'hidden' war of espionage, intrigue, and sabotage.
