With his unique timbre, his total commitment and his touching expressiveness, José Mercé is a legendary voice of flamenco. José Mercé (José Soto Soto) was born in the Andalusian birth place of flamenco : Jerez de la Frontera. At an early age, he fell in love with this vibrant musical culture and sang as a soloist at the Basílica de la Merced, from which he took his artist name. In the 1970s, José Mercé went to Madrid to meet the new generation of flamenco singers and instrumentalists: Camarón, Tomatito, guitarist Paco de Lucía, among others. During the following decade he performed with the famous dancer Antonio Gades. With nearly twenty albums and 1 million copies sold, José Mercé has been an iconic member of the flamenco scene for the past 50 years. At Bozar he performs with a big name in the guitar, also from Jerez, Antonio Higuero, as well as a percussionist and four palmeros.
