In the second half of the 19th century Saint-Gilles evolved from a village into a built-up town. The lower part of the commune preserved its popular character. Newcomers came to live in the area because of its close proximity to Brussels South Station. The upper part of the commune became gentrified and very popular with expats. Today the commune is frequented by a young, trendy crowd.
