WALPURGIS music theatre is a company that specialises in presenting the great opera repertoire in a way that is both amusing and laid-back. The company’s previous productions at La Monnaie have included the fairy-tale operas Princess Turandot and Fidelio, as well as a libretto reading of Daphne. This season, they bring their boundless curiosity and infectious enthusiasm to bear on the libretto of Lucio Silla. Mozart’s opera will be presented without frills and served up tongue in cheek by singers and actors who understand the art of improvisation. The text is spoken, but is spiced up here and there with passages of song. This is an ideal introduction to the real opera, which will premiere two weeks later.
