Apart from being the last burial ground in Brussels to be situated around a church, and being linked, physically and historically, to the Belgian royal family, the cemetery of Laeken has the following features to offer : its underground passageways, the medieval church (built in 1275) and its abundance of sculptural art, e.g; an authentic ‘Thinker’ by Rodin , numerous creations of the Salu ‘dynasty’ of sculptors (Ernest I, II and III whose old workshop is still to be seen near the main entrance) and the tombs of great figures from the worlds of art, architecture, politics and industry, plus, ever since 1850, the tombs of the kings and other members of the royal family.
