The Maritime district is a neighbourhood of Brussels with a rich history and an exciting future - and the perfect place to get to know contemporary digital, spatial and social developments. Numerous innovative projects were developed in and around the canal zone at the beginning of the 20th century. On the Tour & Taxis site, for example, a logistics centre was set up for the clearance of products linked to new mobility throughout Belgium. A little further along the canal, Le Familistère, a utopian community created by self-made man Jean-Baptiste Godin, was born. Today, it is home to the Smart-City project which is in full evolution - and once again it is about the latest form of communication, living, working and living. The smart city is all around us, but at the same time, so self-evident that we often overlook it. How does the city change through the use of new technologies? Discover the innovative Smart City initiatives of the Brussels-Capital Region.
