La Cambre Abbey with the source du Maalbeek was once a contemplative monastery in the Sonian Forest. But agriculture gnawed away at the forest and treefelling was rampant. The edge of the city pushed out as far as the monastery. To embellish the late19thcentury landscaping, fish ponds were created around which ran beautiful streets with art nouveau houses. Other wetland areas were filled in and converted into a city square which boasts the Flagey building. The restoration of Flagey and the presence of students from the ULB Solbosch Campus and La Cambre art school have breathed new life into this district.
