The Maison Autrique town house

Victor Horta’s first building of note, the Maison Autrique is a key component in the architectural heritage of Brussels. Firstly, because this 1893 residence represents a critical stage in the development of Belgium’s greatest architect, but also because this building has undergone what is, in many respects, an exemplary restoration process, facilitating a better understanding of the emergence of Art Nouveau. The scenography designed by Schuiten and Peeters has turned this building into something of a “house of houses”, both a tribute to the architecture of private homes in Brussels and a doorway to the imagination. Carefully presented and displayed from the cellar to the attic, the Maison Autrique underscores the historical and aesthetic appeal of the houses of Brussels, revealing them in all their charm and mystery.
