We're talking about the year 1941. In the ravine at Babi Yar, near Kiev, a special commando of the SS murdered 34,000 Jews in the space of 36 hours. Twenty years later, this abhorrent act inspired the young writer, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, to write the poem Babi Yar, a heartfelt indictment of anti-semitism. Dmitri Shostakovich decided to put the text to music in his Symphony No. 13. The Belgian National Orchestra will be performing this seldom-heard work for orchestra, bass and choir along with Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1, which also includes a significant element for the trumpet.
