‘A requiem for the victims of the Stalin regime’, was how composer Shostakovich described his Seventh Symphony, also known as the Leningrad Symphony. The Russian composer wrote this monumental symphony as an indictment of every form of totalitarianism. It is now one of the most popular symphonic works in the 20th century repertoire. Legendary conductor, Valery Gergiev, brings his Mariinsky Orchestra in from the cold Russian air to the Henry Le Boeuf Hall. Be warned: the powerful brass notes at the end of this symphony will reverberate for some time afterwards!
