There are not many composers so thoroughly identified with their homelands as the Finn Jean Sibelius and the Norwegian Edvard Grieg. In this mini-festival, our Music Director, Alain Altinoglu, takes you on an astonishing adventure in sound through the Nordic lands through some of their absolute masterpieces.

While Sibelius drew the inspiration for his Fifth Symphony from the overwhelming grandeur of the Finnish landscape, Grieg delved into Scandinavian literature. His suite for strings ‘in olden style’, From Holberg’s Time is a truly danceable tribute to the patriarch of Danish and Norwegian literature. Grieg’s collaboration with Henrik Ibsen led him to compose music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. Substantial extracts from this popular work, including the famous ‘Morning’, share the second concert evening with the Sibelius Violin Concerto, a great favourite of the violinist Emmanuel Tsjeknavorian, who makes his La Monnaie debut in it.
