The sea: a unifying factor, but also a destructive natural force. In Benjamin Britten’s dramatic Sea Interludes, the North Sea is the merciless mirror for the rough community of fishermen around Peter Grimes, while in Christina Athinodorou’s Ma Mèr(e) Méditerranée, the Mediterranean Sea is the life-giving mother of a great number of ancient cultures. La Monnaie will present the world premiere of this fascinating piece by a young Cypriot composer who concentrates not on the differences between cultures, but on the bonds between them. Our musical sea voyage ends in Italy, where Alain Altinoglu and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra will anchor in the shade of Ottorino Respighi’s Pini di Roma.
