« Le spectateur doit lui-même trouver du sens à son environnement et utiliser son imagination. Je joue avec l’idée d’être emporté dans des lieux dont on ne pourra peut-être pas revenir. » – Laure Prouvost
‘They Are Waiting For You presented so many different ways of seeing (and, for that matter, hearing). It appeared the whole theatre was activated in order to fracture the distance between language, object, and experience.’ – Victoria Brooks, EMPAC
The exceptional quality of visual artist Laure Prouvost’s work is her search for polyphonic narratives. They are stories full of unexpected associations – told from a constantly changing perspective – with plenty of space for coincidence and dreams, for mistakes and forgetfulness. In her films, she negates the opposition between fact and fiction, image and text, human and machine, screen and space. She creates tactile environments and speaks to you directly, enveloping all your senses in her fantasies.
It is thus no surprise that she has ventured to make her first work for the main stage. Rooted in her film Dit Learn (2017), in which a quick succession of everyday objects, images and texts encourages you to imbue everything with new meaning. You can expect an ‘expanded cinema experience’ in which recorded and live images duplicate the actions in the theatre – dance, music, sound, projection. ‘You are to become the seat you are sat on’.
• The Frenchwoman Laure Prouvost lives in London and Antwerp. She recently held solo exhibitions at Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, 2017) and Fahrenheit (Los Angeles, 2016), among others. Solos are also planned at Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2018) and the M HKA (Antwerp, 2019). Prouvost is part of the Baltic Triennial (Vilnius, 2018). In 2013, she won the prestigious Turner Prize. In 2019, she will represent France at the Venice Biennale.
