  • Once Upon a time in Anderlecht

    Once Upon a Time in Anderlecht is a social initiative created with the support of the Roi Baudouin Foundation and Angelika Mlinar, member of the European Parliament. This initiative aims to give the younger generations communication and self-representation tools for improving the image of Brussels’ suburbs by expressing their point of view. The project is currently in progress and focuses on accumulating video-interviews with iconic people who embody the social diversity of the area. From a series of workshops for kids from the suburbs to audiovisual portraits of people who live and work in Anderlecht, this initiative counterbalances stereotypes such as the “Molenbeek effect”, which has been enhanced by local and recent events, by teaching smartphone videomaking to young people from the suburbs of Brussels.

  • Make.Brussels

    The four-day lock-down imposed in the wake of the Paris attacks and the terrorist threat have significantly tarnished the capital's image and economy. Launched three days after the 22 March attacks, Make.Brussels is a call from Atrium.Brussels to citizens inviting them to get involved and think up creative projects to bring the magic back to downtown Brussels. The project is divided into four phases over eight months from April through December: first, citizens submit their ideas on the web site. Ten workshops in the Pentagon's ten districts and a "speed-making" were organised to encourage local buy-in, idea generation, and networking, then the public selected the 30 best ideas. In phase three, a marathon creative weekend allowed them to be challenged by experts and prototyped into concrete projects. A panel of Brussels personalities ultimately selected the 10 winning projects, kicking off phase four, production.

    A few facts and figures: 372 ideas submitted, 27,936 voters, a hundred marathon participants, ten projects financed at the level of €30,000 each, three projects financed via crowdfunding and two independently.

  • #brusselsandme

    The way tourists take pictures has drastically changed over the last decade: people now want to play the leading role in the picture, relegating the place where the picture was taken to second place. At the same time, more and more of those pictures are being shared every day on the social media so that every tourist can become an ambassador among his or her peers. The City of Brussels and its Alderman responsible for Tourism asked PANORA.ME to resolve this paradox… For three weeks this summer (at the Grand Place and Atomium) and ten days this winter (at the Atomium), tourists are invited to test out a new kind of selfie: the participants take their smartphones (loaded with the PANORA.ME app) to a specific location and trigger a camera placed 200 metres from the selfie-taker’s position. The result is a panoramic selfie: a short video that zooms out from the original location to end on a beautiful panorama.

    Some numbers: 26,809 participants from 148 different countries, resulting in 10,730 panoramic selfies, the short videos have been viewed 429,105 times, reaching more than 2.5 million Facebook users, for a €100.000 investment…

  • STIB OPEN DATA

    For several years the STIB has been providing its schedule data (times, lines, and stops, that is to say the entire availability of scheduled transit) to third parties. A new step was taken on 6 December 2016 with the launch of an Open Data portal accessible to everyone at https://opendata.stib-mivb.be. By sharing its data through its new portal, the STIB enables developers to consult, use, and combine data in order to create new applications that use it, thereby putting mass transit at the heart of daily life to an even greater degree. For the first time in Belgium, the STIB is promoting innovation and opening the door to new, ever-more-innovative solutions to improve the mobility - and the lives - of all Brussels mass transit riders and allowing all kinds of developers to design applications aimed at improving the experience of those visiting Brussels.

  • Commissioner for Europe and International Organisations

    In its first regional policy statement, the Government took on the ambition of giving the Brussels-Capital Region a real host nation policy by creating a proactive body under the aegis of a "Commissioner for Europe," responsible for relations between European and International institutions and the Brussels-Capital Region. Historically a federal matter, this host national policy gradually, through various State reforms, became more of a Regional responsibility. The mandate of the Commissioner for Europe and International Organisations (CEIO) and its Commissioner, Alain Hutchinson, consists of welcoming all international organisations so they can work under the best possible conditions and grow in tandem with Regional development and the needs of area residents. The Commissioner is also the Single Point of Contact for international institutions and organisations, the interface between them and the Brussels authorities and runs the Expat Welcome Desk for the benefit of new international citizens.

  • Station Europe

    Station Europe, the new reception centre for the European Parliament, has set up shop in the former Brussels-Luxembourg train station along the edge of the bustling Place du Luxembourg. It's an ideal place to begin a visit to the European parliament and is constantly expanding its offerings to visitors. Station Europe offers products and services intended to help visitors explore Parliament as well as Brussels in general. Its location in the original Brussels-Luxembourg train station makes it a natural bridge from its historical position in the Leopold District to its present role as the seat of European democracy. See the European Parliament come to life before your eyes thanks to an interactive 3D model. Take a seat at the table in front of the touch screen and immerse yourself in the history of Parliament and choose the historical figure who inspires you the most. Fix your eyes on the dioramas and explore the European Parliament at different times from different angles.
