2019 marks the centenary of the Treaty of Versailles and is also a European election year. The outcome of these European elections remains uncertain. The coincidence (and co-incidence) of these two events is interesting however: are we seeing a return to nationalism, the exact same nationalism which led our continent into war? We have invited some of the greatest European specialists to formulate a response to this question and to discuss four major themes, that shaped the Europe we live in today.Laurence Badel is a professor of the history of international diplomacy at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a member of the Institut P. Renouvin. Her research relates to European diplomatic practices and the interregional processes of the EU.The historian Thomas Maissen lectured at the University of Heidelberg from 2004 until 2013. He was a guest professor at EHESS (2009), a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Princeton (2010) and since September 2013, he is the director of the German Historical Institute in Paris.
