2019 marks the centenary of the Treaty of Versailles and is also a European election year. The outcome of these European elections remains uncertain. The coincidence (and co-incidence) of these two events is interesting however: are we seeing a return to nationalism, the exact same nationalism which led our continent into war? We have invited some of the greatest European specialists to formulate a response to this question and to discuss four major themes, that shaped the Europe we live in today.Riccardo Brizzi teaches contemporary history and the history of political communication at the University of Bologna. He focuses on the political history of the modern era, more specifically the history of the media and political communication.Piers Ludlow is a Reader in the Department of International History of the London School of Economics. He specialises in the history of contemporary Europe and has published several books on trans-Atlantic relations during the Cold War and the European integration process.
