It was in the 1560s, in Brussels, that Bruegel created most of the paintings attributed to him today. Examining the connections between the artist and the city provides a very different interpretation of the man and the city where he lived and worked. The degree to which very recent research has fleshed out our knowledge of this master’s Brussels period is quite astonishing. While the place he lived is not where we always thought, it isn’t very far from there. Margot la Folle, his most famous work, which is held in Antwerp, probably wasn’t painted in Antwerp, but Brussels.
