British historian Mary Beard is one of the biggest names in the world of classical antiquity. She is a Professor at the University of Cambridge, television personality and author of numerous popularising but erudite books on antiquity. Beard has a unique way of showing how antiquity remains relevant today, as a culture that has not only shaped contemporary society but also holds up a mirror to it. This year, she received an honorary doctorate from Ghent University, where she was honoured for her social engagement as an ambassador of science and her role as a feminist. Her famous manifesto Women & Power became a bestseller at home and abroad. This autumn, Twelve Caesars: Images of Power from the Ancient World to the Modern will be published. Beard explains how images of Roman rulers have influenced art, culture and the representation of power for over 2,000 years. During a unique evening in Bozar’s main hall, she will talk to Annelies Beck about her richly packed life, about antiquity and today, about power and feminism.
