The Atlas Brewery is a relic of the rich industrial and brewing history of Brussels. The main buildings date from the 1920s, and the thirty-metre tower and Art Deco façade are typical of the era. To brew beer, use was made of the grande cascade process: each floor of the building was the location for a different stage, from malt production at the top to the storage of beer in the cellars. The words ‘Brasserie Atlas’ can still be seen on a wall in Rue du Libre Examen, Anderlecht, made of white bricks against a red brick background. There are plans to redevelop the site for housing and workshops.
