Belgium is notable for its distinctive brand of humour. This has a streak of self-mockery which sometimes causes artists and decision-makers to put up some surprising statues in public spaces. Thus at Place Sainctelette, by the Canal, the famous Agent 15 from Hergé’s Quick and Flupke series, has his foot grabbed by a vaartkapoen or ‘canal urchin’ emerging from a man-hole cover. This light-hearted statue is the work of Brussels sculptor Tom Frantzen, and was installed in 1994.
