EAS Goes Green - Part 1: Waste

The Brussels-Capital Region’s government has set itself the objective of revitalising the Brussels economy by replacing the current linear economic model with a circular economic system (recover, produce, consume, re-use), an economic model whose objective is to eliminate waste. visit.brussels is committed to reducing the waste of its operations and events. In the face of pollution and the pressure of our consumption patterns on natural resources, it is urgent to reduce our waste production, not only at home but also at work.

Events by definition are one-offs and tend to produce a lot of waste.

Beyond the environmental emergency to act on this waste (because of the pressure of our activities on resources), companies have every interest in engaging their employees and stakeholders to reduce their waste production. First of all, it is about taking collective responsibility. Once perceptions have changed, companies can mobilise their teams around a common project, which will contribute to better working conditions and benefit he environment.

We would like to share some easy steps we have put in place at visit.brussels and for our landmark event, EAS 2019:

  • Reusable dishes: to avoid the overconsumption of disposable products, there are many reusable alternatives (mugs, metal cutlery, plates and Tupperware ...).
  • Organise zero-waste meetings: eliminating single doses (coffee capsules, tea bags, water bottles, etc.) and replacing them with purchases in large packs or in bulk makes it possible to limit waste. And guess what? Two Zero Waste workshops are scheduled for EAS 2019: these workshops will be organised by Zero Waste Belgium and deal with how to reduce waste in your everyday life.
  • We take food waste very seriously, that's why we provide confirmation of the number of meals to minimise food waste. The number of NO SHOWS remains a major concern for event organisers, with disastrous consequences: additional costs for the development and catering, and large amounts of food being thrown out after each event.   • Raise awareness about the impact of cigarette butts: during breaks, the presence of ashtrays, coupled with associated awareness helps to limit the pollution associated with cigarette butts.
  • Print reasonably: by reducing the number of printers (one per floor or per service) or using print management software (with PIN or badge validation), printing errors can be limited in offices. For events: favour digital media and guess what? for EAS 2019 we are totally paperless, i.e. all the information can be found in the EAS Brussels 2019 APP - Download it and you can browse the programme and lists of speakers, partners and activities.
