BIGH is a farm located on the roof of the Foodmet (covered market located on the site of the Anderlecht Slaughterhouses). BIGH stands for Building Integrated Greenhouses and is specialised in fish farming and aquaponic agriculture. Aquaponics is the combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. This means that we grow fish and plants in a closed water cycle, using water sustainably and 95% more efficiently than conventional agriculture. Sustainability, efficiency and circular economy are our fundamental concepts and this is also reflected in our building. Our company, developed and founded by Steven Beckers, reuses the heat generated by the Foodmet to heat the greenhouses and the outdoor rooftop garden. We also use rainwater and groundwater to water our crops and we produce green energy using solar panels. This synergy between architecture and sustainable technology allows us to produce fish, vegetables, fruits and herbs almost all year round. Our production includes rainbow trout, different kinds of tomatoes, basil, thyme, coriander and other herbs and this year we will start producing different chillies, including the spiciest in the world, the Carolina Reaper.
