Dissect the city! - VUB ARCH -  FR/NL/EN

  • Activity 1: Brussels – Then and now, in 3D - 30 to 45 min

An interactive model of part of the city of Brussels, will evolve throughout the festival, with each visitor able to add their personal touch and understand the complexity of urban planning. In addition, it teaches visitors about the complexity of dealing with existing buildings, the advantages of modularity and what it means to be an urban planner.

  • Activity 2: Featherlight – strong as a steel - 30 - 45 min

How do engineers find “efficient shapes” to build light but strong structures? The activity teaches how to use soap bubbles to find the so-called “minimal surface” to fill a form. During this workshop, visitors create designs themselves using simple materials like iron wire and wooden sticks to better understand the principles of building structures.

  • Activity 3: Bending stresses - 30 - 45 min

A deformed structure often risks collapsing. Using intelligent conception, it’s possible to use deformities to make rigid structures with flexible elements. This workshop lets visitors not only attempt to recreate a small-scale model of the “ReciPly dome” and by doing so, they learn to understand material behaviour and how bending energy can be captured and converted into structural rigidity.

Useful information: available in FR/NL/EN - 1h30/2h for the 3 activities (in rotation) - 3x/day – 7 years and older - 30 people/1 school class
Timetable: Friday 10:00 - 12:00; 13:00 - 15:00; 15:00 - 17:00.
No need to pre-book on Saturday and Sunday: constant flow

  • Activity 4: Infinite Materials - 2h

During this workshop, visitors learn how to make a biological building material using mycelium and organic fibres. Utilising the natural growth process of mycelium results in a material which “grows” over time, has a certain mechanical strength, yet can be fully decomposed through natural processes at the end of its lifetime. The activity offers visitors a hands-on experience with a novel way of thinking about building materials and construction waste

Useful information: available in FR/NL/EN - 2h - 3x/day – 7 years and older - 10 people
Timetable: Friday, Saturday & Sunday 10:00 - 12:00; 13:00 - 15:00; 16:00 - 18:00.
